30-Minute Extended Eye Consultation
More time. More tests. More answers. A thorough, unhurried examination for patients with complex needs or specific concerns.
More than a standard eye test
When a Standard Eye Test Isn't Enough
A routine NHS eye test lasts around 20 minutes — often sufficient, but not always. Some patients need a more thorough examination: a complex prescription, a health condition affecting the eyes, or simply a set of questions that deserve a proper answer.
Our 30-minute extended consultation gives your optometrist the time to examine thoroughly, run additional tests where needed, and talk through everything clearly. You leave knowing exactly where you stand.

Your appointment
What Happens During Your 30-Minute Consultation
Every appointment is tailored to the individual. This is a typical outline — your optometrist will adapt it based on your history and what comes up during the examination.
We take the time to fully understand your ocular history, general health, current medications, and any symptoms you have noticed — however minor they may seem.
A thorough optometric examination covering your vision, prescription, eye movements, binocular function, and pupil responses.
As appropriate: visual field screening, intraocular pressure, retinal photography, slit lamp biomicroscopy, or colour vision. Never as a tick-box — only what is relevant to you.
Time to talk through the findings in plain language, ask every question you have, and properly understand what the results mean for you.
A written summary of findings and a clear, agreed plan — whether that is a new prescription, a follow-up appointment, or a GP or hospital referral.

Frequently Asked Questions
A 30-minute appointment is recommended for first-time patients, those with complex prescriptions, patients with specific eye health concerns, and anyone managing systemic conditions such as diabetes or hypertension. If you are unsure, just ask when booking — we will advise you.
The NHS funds a standard sight test. The extended 30-minute consultation is a private appointment that provides additional time and testing beyond what the NHS test covers. We will always be transparent about what is included and what the cost is before your appointment.
Depending on your needs, we may carry out visual field screening, eye pressure measurement, retinal photography, slit lamp biomicroscopy, or colour vision assessment. Your optometrist will discuss any additional tests with you and explain the findings.
When booking — by phone or online — simply ask for a 30-minute extended consultation. We will reserve the extra time and make a note of any specific concerns you have so the optometrist can prepare.
