Beyond the letters on the chart

Mapping Your Peripheral Vision in Detail

Central visual acuity — reading the letters on the chart — tells only part of the story. Your peripheral vision is just as important for driving, navigating, and detecting the early signs of serious eye conditions.

Automated visual field testing creates a detailed map of your peripheral vision, highlighting any areas of reduced sensitivity that might indicate glaucoma, retinal disease, or neurological conditions. It is one of the most clinically informative tests in optometry.

Simple and straightforward

What Happens During Visual Field Testing

The test is non-invasive and requires no preparation. We test each eye separately. Results are available immediately.

Preparation

We explain the test before you begin and ensure you are comfortable. If you wear glasses, you will keep them on — we may use a trial lens to correct your prescription inside the instrument.

Fixation point

You look at a fixed target in the centre of the bowl. It is important to keep your gaze steady throughout — the test measures your peripheral vision, not your central vision.

Responding to lights

You press a button each time you see a small light appear anywhere in your visual field. The lights vary in intensity and position. Do not worry about missing some — this is expected and accounted for.

Both eyes tested

Each eye is tested separately, one after the other. The test takes approximately 5–10 minutes per eye depending on the type of test and your responses.

Instant printout

Results are printed immediately. Your optometrist reviews the result map with you and explains what it shows. A copy is added to your clinical record and, where relevant, provided for GP or DVLA submission.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Visual field testing maps the full extent of your peripheral (side) vision. You look at a central point and respond to dim lights appearing around the edges of your vision. The results create a map of where your visual field is intact and where it may be reduced or absent. It is a key test for detecting and monitoring glaucoma, neurological conditions, and retinal disease.

A standard automated visual field test takes approximately 5–10 minutes per eye. For screening purposes it may be shorter. Your optometrist will advise on the type of test needed based on your clinical picture.

Yes — visual field testing does not require dilating drops and will not affect your vision. You can drive before and after the appointment as normal.

Yes. The DVLA requires drivers with certain conditions — including monocular vision, retinal disease, and treated glaucoma — to demonstrate that their visual field meets the Group 1 or Group 2 driving standard. We can carry out the appropriate field test and provide a printout for DVLA submission.
