Detailed Eye Examination Without the Hospital Wait

The slit lamp biomicroscope provides the level of detail needed to diagnose and monitor a wide range of eye conditions — in our Wythenshawe practice, not a hospital outpatient department.

Our optometrists use slit lamp examination as part of comprehensive eye tests, contact lens assessments, red eye appointments, and specialist monitoring clinics. Where a referral is needed, our findings and images accompany it.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

A slit lamp (or biomicroscope) is a specialised microscope that uses a thin beam of light to illuminate and magnify the structures of the eye. It allows your optometrist to examine the cornea, lens, iris, conjunctiva, and — using an additional lens — the vitreous, retina, and optic nerve in fine detail.

No — the examination is completely non-contact and painless. You sit at the instrument, rest your chin on a support, and look at a fixation target. The bright light can be momentarily uncomfortable but causes no harm to the eyes.

Slit lamp examination is routinely used as part of a comprehensive eye test, contact lens assessment, and CUES clinic appointments. It is also used for monitoring conditions such as keratoconus, cataracts, anterior uveitis, and corneal scarring.

Not always. The front of the eye can be examined without drops. To examine the lens and retina in depth, we may recommend dilating drops. Your optometrist will discuss this with you before the appointment, including any impact on your vision for the hours afterwards.
